Dental implants are the strongest, most reliable, and longest-lasting form of tooth replacement. Inserted directly into the jawbone, dental implants replace a tooth’s missing root to continue the signals necessary for the body to know minerals are needed in that area of the jaw. This gives dental implants one of their largest advantages – the ability to prevent jaw shrinkage and collapse. It also, however, makes the procedure ill-suited for some patients.
If you live in Cherry Creek or surrounding Metro Denver communities and would like to learn if dental implants are right for your needs, please contact Dewitt Dental Associates to schedule a consultation today. Appointments can also be made by calling our office at 303-566-4036 and speaking directly with one of our friendly and helpful team members.
Jaw Width and Density
One of the biggest factors in determining your candidacy for implant dentistry is the width and depth of your jawbone. If you have been missing teeth for quite some time, it is likely that your jawbone will lack the structure necessary to properly support an implant. This issue can be dealt with through bone-grafting, though that is also not an ideal option for every patient.
When there is insufficient bone structure to support a traditional dental implant and bone-grafting is not a good option, other types of dental implants may be recommended. Plate-form and subperiosteal options may be discussed during your implant dentistry consultation when this is the case.
If you are not a good candidate for dental implants, Dr. Dewitt will be happy to discuss alternatives such as a dental bridge for the restoration of your smile. While not as strong as dental implants, bridges are capable of restoring strength and beauty, and can produce a long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth.
