Root canal therapy is an important general dentistry service at our Cherry Creek practice. After exploring all the options to stop tooth decay, our experienced dentists may recommend root canal therapy if the infection is advanced and the tooth is in danger of dying. This option can help you avoid losing the tooth completely. To schedule an appointment to determine if you have tooth decay, please call DeWitt Dental Associates at 303-566-4036.

The Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is commonly recommended when a large cavity has advanced to the nerve and pulp tissue housed inside of your root canals. This type of infection is quite advanced, and, left untreated, it can cause an abscessed tooth and tooth death. Once the tooth has died, it most likely will need to be pulled. Root canal therapy is a way to conserve the tooth while removing the infection. Root canal therapy is beneficial because it:

  • Prevents spread of infection
  • Prevents death of tooth nerves
  • Can save your tooth from extraction
  • Is a relatively quick, painless procedure

Sedation dentistry can be provided for anxious patients. We will make sure the treatment area is numb before beginning the treatment. Root canal therapy has a reputation as a scary, painful procedure, but it's actually relatively simple and painless since we make sure that area is numbed to any sensitivity.

The Root Canal Procedure

During this treatment, the infected nerve tissue and dental pulp is removed with a dental file. The tooth is cleaned out and flushed with a sterilizing solution to remove any bacteria the remains. The tooth is then sealed and restored with a dental crown. The result is a tooth that is saved from extraction, and the dental crown creates a natural-looking restoration that enhances your smile.

Advanced tooth decay does not necessarily cause any symptoms. If you do have symptoms, you may be sensitive to hot and cold temperatures on a certain tooth, or you may feel pain around that tooth. But you can be completely unaware of a dental cavity, which is why your routine dental exams and cleanings are so important to preventing and identifying dental decay. At our office, we can prevent these problems and treat them promptly if they should arise.
