Types of Sedation Dentistry
At DeWitt Dental Associates, we provide two types of dental sedation:
IV sedation: Our dental practice is licensed by the State of Colorado to provide minimal to moderate intravenous sedation. By gently inserting a needle in your arm, our experienced sedation dentist Dr. DeWitt can administer IV sedation. The IV can be adjusted to place you in a mild or moderate state of relaxation, in which you'll still be awake. If you and Dr. DeWitt decide a deep state of sedation is required, an experienced nurse anesthetist will conduct the IV sedation, placing you in a sleep-like state.
Nitrous oxide: Also known as "laughing gas," what people refer to as nitrous oxide is actually a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Using a mask, you breathe the gas through your nose, and you will feel the effects in less than 30 seconds. Nitrous oxide allows you to relax while still remaining awake and aware. The effects also wear off quickly after you stop inhaling the gas.
When you visit us for a consultation, we'll help you consider nitrous oxide vs IV sedation dentistry. Nitrous oxide is routinely used for many different types of appointments, but you may prefer IV sedation if your anxiety is severe or if the procedure is complex.
Can you benefit from Sedation Dentistry?
The benefits of sedation dentistry are best suited to the patient who is afraid or anxious at the dentist's office and during dental appointments. For some people, this anxiety and fear causes them to neglect their oral health by failing to schedule routine cleanings and exams. Without this routine care, dental problems can go undetected, progressing into more serious dental problems. If this sounds like you, then sedation may be a good option for dealing with your dental anxiety, and getting the dental care you need and deserve.
You may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry if any of the following apply to you:
- Past dental trauma or bad dental experience
- Anxiety or fear experienced during dental appointments
- Need for several treatments in one appointment
- Treatment for complex dental problems
- Treatments likely to feel uncomfortable
The only way to know if sedation is right for you is to visit us for a consultation. We want to help you overcome your dental fear, whether it's slight or severe, so that you can enjoy optimum oral health.
