Fighting Bad BreathBad breath is one of those dental problems we all deal with from time to time, but which everyone wants to avoid. While you may be able to conceal the odor temporarily with mints or chewing gum, consider these tips to combat bad breath at its source:

  • Improve your oral hygiene. Unclean teeth and gums cause bad breath in two ways: The sticky film of plaque that builds up on your teeth contains bacteria that cause bad odor. Also, the presence of food and beverage debris lingering on your teeth cause odor. Brush and floss to fight these bad-breath causers.
  • Visit the dentist for routine cleanings and exams. Some of the biofilm and tartar cannot be removed with your brush and floss. The dental hygienist uses specialized instruments and techniques to clean and polish your teeth, which will help you combat odor. Our dentists will examine your teeth, gums and oral cavities, and part of this exam includes looking for any problems that may be causing bad breath and other symptoms.
  • Keep your mouth hydrated. When your mouth is dry, acid produced by bacteria and food particles linger in your mouth and emit bad odors. Saliva rinses away the odor causers, and you can moisten your mouth by drinking water or chewing gum (which stimulates saliva production).
  • Quit smoking and other tobacco use. Tobacco and smoking is not only bad for your long-term health, it's also a major cause of bad breath. Nicotine patches and gum have helped many people quit. Speak to your doctor about support programs or prescription medications if you are having a hard time kicking the habit.
  • Know which foods cause breath odor. You probably know that certain foods – such as garlic and raw onion – leave your breath less than fresh. But did you know that brushing your teeth won't combat the odor? That's because elements of what you eat make it into your bloodstream and are carried to your lungs. You then breathe out the odor. But many of these odor-causing foods are healthy and delicious! Instead of avoiding eating them altogether, just be aware you may breathe out their odors for several hours after eating them. Skip them if you are going on a date or getting together with friends or coworkers who you'll feel more confident around with fresh breath.

Persistent bad breath that doesn't go away may be a sign of a deeper issue, such as gum disease. If you are concerned about your breath odor, you should ask one of our experienced dentists about the cause of the odor.

If you are searching for an experienced, caring Denver dentist to rejuvenate your smile and provide individualized treatment plans for the issue you are concerned about, please call DeWitt Dental Associates at 303-321-5656.

Teeth Whitening in Denver, Colo.A bright, white smile is a feature adored by many of us. Sedation Dentistry in DenverDental sedation provides a way for you to relax and ease your worries while being treated at the dentist's office. A consultation with one of our experienced dentists is needed to determine if sedation may be right for you, but generally it may be a good option if one or more of the following statements applies to you:

  • You feel anxious and/or fearful during dental appointments.
  • You had a traumatic experience at the dentist's office in the past.
  • You avoid scheduling even the most routine dental appointments because of how you feel at the dental office.
  • Your dentist has told you that you need several treatments performed in a single appointment.
  • You feel severe physical discomfort in the dental treatment chair, possibly triggered by tension or a very sensitive gag reflex.

We provide nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") for a mild sedative effect. We offer IV sedation for a stronger effect. Dr. Michael DeWitt is qualified to provide mild to moderate sedation, and we use the services of nurse anesthetist for deeper levels of sedation.

To learn more about sedation dentistry or to schedule an appointment with our experienced Denver sedation dentist in Denver, please call DeWitt Dental Associates at 303-321-5656. We are located in Cherry Creek and we are state-licensed to provide IV sedation dentistry.

Protect your Teeth from Barbecue StainsIt's barbecue season. A great time to celebrate with friends or family, a barbecue is a wonderful summertime event. But this type of dining can pose a couple dental hygiene problems. There are really two main barbecue culprits as far as your teeth are concerned –

Barbecue sauce stains: The spices and ingredients in most barbecue sauces are major teeth stainers. The dark color of the sauce stains on its own, and because the sauce is sticky, it's much more likely to linger on your enamel until you brush.

Meat stuck between your teeth: Barbecue meat, especially ribs, definitely get stuck between your teeth, sometimes in really tight spaces. Not only can this be annoying to feel, it can lead to plaque buildup the longer it sticks to your tooth enamel.

So what's the solution? Everyone should be able to enjoy barbecue this summer, so consider the following tips for dealing with the issues above –

  • Drink water: Drinking water or swishing water in your mouth rinses away a lot of the sauce, preventing it from sitting on your teeth where it can cause stains and plaque.
  • Brush your teeth: We realize this one might not be so convenient when you're celebrating at a barbecue, so we recommend swishing with water if you are unable to brush your teeth. If you can brush, doing so will remove the sauce from your enamel.
  • Floss: If you get food stuck between your teeth, the best way to remove it is with floss or floss picks. Consider stepping away from the party for a moment to get the decay inducing pieces of meat from out of your teeth so you can go back and smile with confidence.
  • Eat the celery and carrots: Most barbecues have some assortment of fresh vegetables. Eat these along with your meat so that the crunchy veggies can carry away some of the food stuck between your teeth.

The best way to feel confident about your smile this summer may be to get teeth whitening treatment or another type of cosmetic dentistry that fits your goals. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you just can't prevent all the staining from foods and beverages, and professional whitening may be needed to restore bright, white teeth.

Although the rain continues to fall across Denver, warmer temperatures topping out in the 80s are forecasted in the weeks to come. The experienced dentists and staff at DeWitt Dental Associates know your mind may be turning to those hallmark summertime treats, like ice cream, popsicles and snow cones. We know most people don't want to eliminate these things altogether, but you should consider enjoying them just every once and a while. Those types of treats contain high levels of sugar, which sits on your teeth and contributes to the formation of plaque and eventual tooth decay. You can mitigate the effect by enjoying these treats along with a meal, which causes your mouth to produce saliva and wash away some of the sugar.

Summer is a great time to cool off with a frozen or chilled treat. After a day on the trails, mountains, lakes or elsewhere in sunny Colorado, reward yourself with one of these healthier, teeth-friendlier options –

  • Mouth-Healthy Summer DessertsStrawberries: Chilled or room-temperature strawberries offer a delicious snack bursting with summer flavor. They are also good for your teeth and body, containing lots of vitamin C, as well as potassium and fiber.
  • Frozen grapes: Next time you buy grapes, stick some in the freezer. When frozen, they are similar to the experience of a popsicle. They don't get as hard as ice, so they shouldn't be difficult to chew or break your teeth. Try green and red grapes for flavor variety.
  • Frozen yogurt tubes: Many yogurt manufacturers have yogurt tubes (just yogurt that comes in a tube instead of a cup). Freeze these yogurt tubes for an ice cream-like dessert that has lots of teeth-healthy calcium without as much sugar and fat as ice cream.
  • Fruit parfaits: Fruit parfaits are a great dessert that look just as at home at a dinner party as they do at a backyard barbecue. There is a wide array of parfait recipes on the internet, but generally the idea is to layer yogurt, fresh fruit, nuts and other ingredients in a tall cup.

Of course everything is best in moderation, and you should follow any dietary restrictions as advised by your doctor or nutritionist. And if you have very young children susceptible to choking hazards, you may not want to give them the frozen grapes. But these fruit and dairy based treats can be a much healthier alternative to those summertime staples that tend to cause cavities.

Ready to revamp your smile for summer? Call DeWitt Dental Associates at 303-321-5656 today to learn about teeth whitening and other cosmetic dental treatments that refresh the attractiveness of your smile.
