Patients who have lost one or more of their natural teeth used to have only limited options for restoration. While dentures and bridges continue to offer excellent solutions to many people with missing teeth, many others prefer the comfort and convenience of implant dentistry. Please contact DeWitt Dental Associates in Denver today at 303-566-4036 to schedule an appointment to learn more about dental implants.
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is composed of two parts. The implant itself is a small titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jaw to physically replace the root of a missing tooth. A natural process called osseointegration allows your jawbone to biologically fuse with the implant over a period of a few months, which means that it becomes a part of your body, not unlike an artificial knee or elbow.
Once the area surrounding the dental implant has healed, a prosthetic dental crown is attached to a small abutment that protrudes from the gums. This crown looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth and can be shaded to seamlessly blend with your smile. After the crown is in place, your implant placement is complete.
Advantages of Dental Implants
Dental implants offer numerous advantages over other restoration methods. Because the implant becomes a physical part of your mouth, the jawbone does not continue to lose strength and adjacent natural teeth don’t become more susceptible to gum disease.
But perhaps the most obvious advantage is the immense convenience that dental implants offer. You simply care for them as you would your natural teeth: Brushing, flossing, and regular checkups are all you need to maintain a healthy smile. There’s no soaking regimen, and you don’t need to follow any special diets. Once the implant is in place, you don’t have to think about it anymore. You can simply enjoy your life.
Candidates for Implant Dentistry
Most patients who wish to receive dental implants are able to do so. Some patients who lack sufficient bone density in the jaw may be disqualified, but there are bone grafting techniques that may permit even these individuals to be treated with implants. Your Denver dentist will discuss your medical history and implant options with you at your consultation to determine if implants are right for you.
If you’re missing a tooth, your self-image need not suffer any longer. To learn more about dental implants, please contact DeWitt Dental Associates today at 303-566-4036 to schedule your appointment with one of our Denver implant dentists.
